The Department of Persian established in 1962, is one of the oldest departments of the University and it has the honour of having distinctive achievements in the field of Teaching, Research and Publications. As an acknowledgement, the Department was declared as the Centre of Excellence in 2010 under DSA, SAP-I of UGC. In addition to Post Graduation and Doctorate in Persian, the Department offers Diploma and Certificate Courses in Modern Spoken Persian. A good number of students have completed their courses and many of them have been able to get jobs in public and private sectors.

The Department has privilege of being served by eminent scholars who were conferred presidential awards for their rich contribution to Persian Language and Literature like Prof. A. Q. Sarwari, Prof. S. D. Ahmad, Prof. M. M. Masoodi and Prof. Syeda Rukaya. Again there are some prominent figures who started their career in the Department and rose to heights while shifting  to other departments like Gianpeth Awardee and Sahitiya  Academy Awardees, Prof. Rehman Rahi, Prof. Marqoob Banihali and first Prof. Emirates of the University Prof. K. N. Pandita.

The mission of the Department is to offer students quality education in Persian Language and Literature to enable them to explore local, regional and global opportunities in the field of education as well as various spheres of economy.



Vision

The Department envisions itself as being a forerunner in the preservation and dissemination of Persian Language and Literature with particular focus on their significance in Kashmiri Culture and Heritage.
